News in Brief: A National Roundup
The principal of Santee Education Complex in Los Angeles has been temporarily reassigned, pending an investigation by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Vincent Carbino had been the subject of protests by students and teachers at the high school after they accused him of canceling several classes, including Advanced Placement courses. The unexpected changes, they allege, were made before a visit to the school by inspectors because the proper textbooks for those courses were not available. ("Troubled L.A. School Roiled by Protests Over Principal," Aug. 29, 2007.)
Margo Minecki, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, which conducts the inspections in keeping with a 2004 legal settlement, said the office would reinspect Santee because of the allegations.
